California seventh-consecutive-day rules for field crews

The hardest state in the country to get right, and the one where getting it wrong is most expensive. California layers daily overtime, double time, a seventh-day premium, meal and rest periods and a split-shift premium on top of the federal weekly rule, and it lets employees enforce most of it themselves.

What the law requires

On the seventh consecutive day worked in a workweek, the first 8 hours are overtime and everything past 8 is double time.

What it means on a crew

The trap is which day counts as the seventh. Mendoza v. Nordstrom ties it to the employer's own workweek, so a shop whose week starts Sunday and one whose week starts Monday can look at the same seven calendar days and owe different money.

What Punchless does

The premium is keyed to your configured workweek start, not to Sunday and not to whatever day a report happens to end on. Set your workweek in Settings and every surface uses it.

Every rule we enforce is published with the statute behind it and the test that checks it, so this is a claim you can verify rather than take on faith.
