The hours have to hold up - wage-and-hour rules computed by state, an approval step, and a record that survives someone disputing it months later. Also if your crew works anywhere with patchy signal.

Budget is the constraint, or you are a small team who mostly needs attendance rather than a defensible payroll record. Jibble is a good product and its free tier is a real one.
The core difference
Jibble
On Premium, Jibble uses each member's location to log clock-ins and clock-outs automatically as they enter or leave a geofenced area, and you can choose to automate the clock-in, the clock-out or both. It requires location permission set to Always. Their documentation is candid about the limits: if a device is off, in airplane mode or has poor GPS signal, automatic entries are not generated, and on iOS only twenty geofences can be active at once.
Punchless
Same primitive, different failure behaviour. Points captured with no signal are queued on the device and sent when it reconnects, so a shift in a basement or a canyon still produces a timecard rather than a gap. There is no cap on how many job sites can be active, and the hours then run through a wage-and-hour engine before anyone approves them.

Published annual figures vary between sources, so check the current number before you rely on it. Either way Jibble is several times cheaper than we are, and their free tier sets the price expectation for this whole category. We would rather say that plainly than have you discover it after a demo.

Does Jibble do automatic clock-in?+
Yes, on Premium. Their documentation describes locations being used to log clock-ins and clock-outs automatically on entering or leaving a geofence, with the option to automate one direction or both. It needs location permission set to Always. It is a real implementation and anyone claiming we are the only product that does this is wrong.
What happens in Jibble when there is no signal?+
Their documentation states that if devices are turned off, in airplane mode or without a good GPS signal, automatic entries are not generated. That is honest of them, and for a lot of teams it never matters. It matters a great deal if your crews work in basements, plant rooms, lift shafts or rural areas - those hours simply do not appear and someone reconstructs them later. Punchless queues points on the device and sends them when the phone reconnects.
Is the twenty-geofence limit on iOS a real problem?+
Only above twenty active sites. It is a platform limit rather than something Jibble did wrong - iOS caps how many regions an app can monitor - and Android has no such cap. If you run a handful of recurring sites you will never touch it. If you run several dozen live jobs and your techs carry iPhones, you will.
Jibble is a tenth of the price. What am I paying you for?+
The wage-and-hour engine and the record. Overtime by state including daily and double time, the seventh consecutive day, non-pyramiding, meal and rest thresholds, the split-shift premium, an approval step before anything becomes payroll, and every edit kept alongside what it replaced. We publish the statute behind each rule and the gaps we have not closed. If you do not carry that exposure, that is a lot of money for machinery you will not use, and Jibble is the better buy.
Can I start on Jibble and move later?+
