Punchless vs. QuickBooks Time
QuickBooks Time, formerly TSheets, is the default choice for companies already running QuickBooks, and that native payroll connection is a genuine advantage. What it is not, despite how it is often described, is an automatic GPS time clock. Geofencing sits on the top tier and sends a notification.

You want hours that are right without anyone acting on a notification, and you are willing to export into QuickBooks rather than live inside it.

The core difference
QuickBooks Time
Geofencing is available on the Elite tier only. When a worker enters a geofence, QuickBooks Time sends a push notification; their own help documentation notes the worker can disregard it and clock in as normal, and the flow to accept it is to open the app and select Clock in. There is one narrow exception, where a worker who starts a clock-in before arriving can pre-select to be clocked in on arrival.

No notification, no tier requirement, no tap. The geofence crossing produces the entry directly, on every plan.

Time Premium: $20 per month base plus $10 per user per month. Time Elite: $40 per month base plus $12 per user per month. The base fee includes one admin; every other user is charged per seat.
The base fees are frequently advertised at half price ($10 and $20) as a promotion limited to the first three months, after which list pricing applies. Compare against the list price rather than the promotional one. Geofencing requires Elite.

Moving from QuickBooks Time
Keep QuickBooks, change what feeds it
Most companies moving from QuickBooks Time are not leaving QuickBooks. Punchless exports payroll-ready records to QuickBooks, so the ledger stays where it is and only the source of the hours changes.
Load your job sites
Export your job codes and customer addresses and set them up as geofenced sites, with the radius set per site. QuickBooks Time uses a 100 metre minimum; ours can go tighter where streets are dense.
Run one crew in parallel
Keep QuickBooks Time live for a pay period and put one crew on Punchless. Compare the two sets of hours for the same jobs before committing.
Check the export against a real payroll run

Does QuickBooks Time clock employees in automatically when they arrive?+
Not by default. Geofencing is available on the Elite tier and sends a push notification when a worker enters or leaves a job site. Their own documentation says a team member can choose to clock in as normal and disregard the notification, and that accepting it means opening the app and selecting Clock in. There is one narrow exception: a worker who starts a clock-in before arriving can select an option to be clocked in once they arrive. That is opt-in per instance, not the standard behaviour.
Do I need QuickBooks to use QuickBooks Time?+
Yes. QuickBooks Time requires a QuickBooks Online account. Punchless is standalone and exports to QuickBooks, ADP, Gusto, Paychex or plain CSV, so it does not assume anything about the rest of your stack.
Is Punchless cheaper than QuickBooks Time?+
It depends on crew size and which tier you need. QuickBooks Time Elite is $40 a month plus $12 per user, so an eight-person crew is around $136. Punchless Essentials for eight users is $232. We are more expensive at that size. What you get is geofencing on every plan rather than only the top one, an automatic record instead of a reminder, and certified payroll included.
Does QuickBooks Time track location when workers are off the clock?+
Their own disclosure states that QuickBooks Time requests GPS points for users when they are off the clock in order to determine whether they have entered a geofence, and that account admins may require location to be set to Always. It also states those points are not saved on their servers and remain on the device. Punchless collects nothing outside shift hours, which is a simpler thing to explain to a crew.
Is QuickBooks Time the same as TSheets?+
Yes. TSheets was acquired by Intuit and rebranded as QuickBooks Time. If you are searching for TSheets pricing or TSheets alternatives, this is the same product.
