Timeero is the closest competitor we have, and the one we take most seriously. It is the only tool in this category besides us whose own documentation describes genuine zero-tap automatic clock-in and clock-out. It is also considerably cheaper. This page is about where that trade lands.

You want the automatic timecard to be the product rather than a setting, and you want jobs, invoicing or dispatch in the same system as the hours.

Cost is the deciding factor, or mileage reimbursement is a bigger problem for you than timecard accuracy. Timeero is a third of our price and does its job well.
The core difference
Timeero
Timeero offers automatic clock in and out as a feature you enable on the Pro and Premium tiers. Their own help documentation describes it plainly, and also carries their own caution that it may not provide the highest level of accuracy and should be relied on carefully. On the Basic tier it is not available at all.
Punchless
Punchless has no manual mode to fall back to. The geofence crossing is the timecard on every plan, including the trial, because the whole product is built around the assumption that nobody taps anything. There is no tier where you get a punch clock instead.

Add-ons are separate: Segmented Tracking from $5 per user per month and Messaging at $2 per user per month, both Pro and Premium only. Timeero is meaningfully cheaper than Punchless and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Punchless is the better fit when

Moving from Timeero
Export your job sites
Pull your address list out of Timeero and load it into Punchless as job sites. If you were using custom geofence shapes, note that we use a radius per site, so a few irregular sites will need the radius set deliberately.
Run both for one pay period
Keep Timeero running and put one crew on Punchless. Comparing two sets of hours for the same week against the same jobs is the only test that settles this.
Compare what needed correcting
The number to watch is not total hours, it is how many entries a manager had to touch. That is the cost you are actually trying to remove.
Move payroll export last
Once the hours look right, switch the payroll export. Both tools export to the major payroll systems, so this is the least risky part of the move.
Punchless vs. Timeero: common questions
Does Timeero really do automatic clock in and out?+
Yes. This is the one competitor where the honest answer is yes rather than a qualified no. Timeero's own help documentation states that with Auto Clock in/out enabled, users are clocked in and out when they enter or exit the geofence. Two caveats worth knowing: it is not available on the Basic tier, and Timeero itself advises that it may not provide the highest level of accuracy and that users should exercise caution when relying on it.
Is Punchless better than Timeero?+
For automatic timecards specifically, we think our approach is stronger because it is the only mode we have, which means the whole system is designed around it rather than offering it as a switch. But Timeero is a good product at a third of the price, and if cost is your deciding factor that is a legitimate reason to choose it. We would rather tell you that than lose your trust in the first month.
Why is Punchless more expensive than Timeero?+
Because Punchless is not only a time tracking tool. The Pro and Elite tiers include invoicing, estimates, memberships, a customer portal, dispatch and route optimization. If all you need is accurate hours and mileage, you are paying us for capability you will not use, and Timeero is the better value.
Which is better for certified payroll?+
Punchless generates certified payroll natively from the same approved timecards used for payroll, and it is included on every plan. Timeero's documented path runs through a partnership with Points North, which produces the actual forms from Timeero's data. If prevailing-wage reporting is central to your work, having it in one system is worth something.
Can I switch from Timeero without losing history?+
Your historical records stay in Timeero, and you should export them before you close the account. Punchless starts building history from the day your crew installs the app. Most companies run both for one pay period, compare, and then switch.
